Nitrate and fluoride are both common inorganic substances in drinking water reports, but they come from very different places and mean very different things when they show up.

Nitrate
Commonly from agricultural fertilizer runoff or septic systems. Above the legal limit, it's an immediate concern especially for infants.
Fluoride
Often added deliberately for dental health; can also occur naturally.

Filtration

Nitrate falls in the Inorganics category โ€” reverse osmosis is generally the most effective single technology against it; carbon filtration offers only partial protection. Fluoride removal specifically requires an RO system or specialized activated alumina filter โ€” standard carbon filters do not remove it.
